THE HISTORY OF CRADLEY: WILLS AND INVENTORIES

We review The History of Cradley: Wills and Inventories - A Study of life in Cradley in the 16th and 17th centuries

"Wills and Inventories" is the latest addition to the brilliant "History of Cradley" series from the team of Margaret Bradley and Barry Blunt.

At the core of this 97 page book are the transcriptions of 55 wills and 44 inventories of 76 16th and 17th century individuals, found in the archives of the Worcestershire Record Office, either on microfilm at the Family History Centre or as original documents at County Hall.

The first will is that of William Darby in 1523, and the last is Thomas Jesson's in 1686/7.

On the very first page, Margaret and Barry write that the original documents are

... written in phonetic English, with the same word being spelt many different ways [...] Capital letters are used indiscriminately, punctuation is arbitrary [...] Once the reader becomes accustomed to the text the documents become easier to understand.

"Once the reader becomes accustomed to the text the documents become easier to understand" - the present writer would say that these ancient documents are, in their original form, next to impossible to decipher for an amateur who has not the skill and experience of a Margaret Bradley or a Barry Blunt!

Not so very long ago this reviewer obtained some twenty photocopies of Cradley-related documents (in both Latin and English) dating from Tudor and later times, with the intention of transcribing them for Cradley Links. From painful experience I can attest to the enormous - indeed almost insuperable - difficulties involved in wringing even a few lines from the impenetrable fog of 500-year old handwriting. Perhaps one day these records may give up their secrets, but until then, most remain stubbornly opaque.

One can only stand in awe of Margaret and Barry for the talent, dedication, time and sheer hard work which they have brought to the task of transcribing, in full, just under 100 of these documents.

Genealogists should be aware that many other "names" also appear in the transcriptions as executors, beneficiaries, etc.

Sadly, some readers of this book will, inevitably, put it aside if, after a brief skim, they find no names from their own family tree. They will have missed so much.

Although the transcriptions are - obviously - absolute manna from heaven for genealogists with an interest in Cradley, the true and lasting value of this work is, as the title states, "A Study of life in Cradley in the 16th and 17th centuries".

Many terms which were in common usage at the time of these wills are unknown to us today. Wills and Inventories has an extensive glossary (where on earth did Margaret and Barry find the meanings of all those words?) at the end of the book. Here is an extract:
